Sparkling Salt Crystal Eggs ![]()
Turn ordinary eggshells into dazzling geode-like treasures—a magical science-meets-art project for kids and adults alike!
You’ll Need:
12 cups water
¾ cup salt (table or sea salt works!)
12 clean, dry eggshells (halved or with tops carefully removed)
Elmer’s glue
Food coloring (optional, for rainbow hues)
Paintbrush (for precision)
Let’s Make Magic:
Prep the Shells: Brush the insides of your eggshells with a thin layer of glue, then immediately sprinkle with salt to coat. Tip: Tilt shells to shake off excess—this creates better crystal “seeds.”
Dry Time: Let shells sit for 15–20 minutes until glue is tacky. (Patience = bigger crystals!)
Super-Saturated Solution: Boil water, then stir in salt until no more dissolves (tiny undissolved grains at the bottom mean it’s perfect!). For color, mix in 2–3 drops of food coloring.
Pour & Grow: Carefully fill each shell with the hot saltwater. Place them on a tray (a baking sheet works) and let them sit undisturbed for 12–24 hours. Watch as crystals sprout like frost!
Reveal Your Gems: Once crystals reach your desired size, gently pour out leftover liquid. Admire your glittering creations!
Pro Tips:
Experiment: Try different salt types (Epsom salt makes needle-like crystals!).
Safety First: Adults should handle boiling water. Kids can decorate with markers after crystals form!
Display: Nestle finished eggs in a bowl or turn them into ornaments with ribbon.
